A Digidestined is now defined as one who has a Digivice, because everyone in the world has a Digimon. The Original Digidestined refer to those who were chosen by fate, rather than born to one of them. This includes the Dark Seed Children, and the International Digidestined. There have been none chosen snice 2002.
The year is 2062, and most of the Digidesitned are alive. All of the main ones are, in any case. However, they're all in nursing homes, or otherwise incapacitated; however, their heirs are taking care of the Digital World. The sons and daughters of the Digidestined have access to the Digital World, but the rest of the world doesn't. The sons and daughters of the Digidestined find their Digivices between their eighth and twelfth birthdays, in following of the tradition. There have been no additional Crests or Digieggs found since the Original Digidestineds' time.
All humans are delivered a Digiegg at birth, through some unknown force. Most political and religious systems have adopted them as a part of society, although there are a few dissenters; in addition, a current world-wide debate is whether or not Digimon should be able to vote.
Digimon who die in the real world do not become reincarnated as new eggs, just the same as humans don't.
That's really all you need to know at this point; all else will be given in time.
